Vitalik Buterin presented an updated Ethereum roadmap after the start of the zero phase of Eth2
Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin has published an up-to-date version of the project roadmap, taking into account the launch of phase 0 of the Eth2 update that took place this week.
The roadmap was originally prepared in March. Buterin then said that it includes plans for 5-10 years ahead. The new roadmap is no longer phase 1 (data sharding without directly affecting application performance) and phase 2 (full sharding to the promised many thousands of transactions per second). The corresponding developments are now directly incorporated into the schema in a more independent form. In the roadmap, Buterin also depicted how approximately each stage was completed..
“Much has been done, but there is still a lot to be done,” he writes..
According to the presented plan, the next important steps in the development of Ethereum are the merging of the existing chain with the new one, the release of lightweight Eth2 clients based on Eth1 and data sharding. Previously it was assumed that these tasks would be completed during phases 1 and 1.5.
Over time, the developers became convinced that these are, by and large, different directions that can be worked out simultaneously. In addition, it turned out that these developments will be enough to make significant progress on the scalability issue thanks to the launch of roll-up technology on a sharded data structure. Achieving this point is expected to provide throughput of 10,000 transactions per second..
According to Buterin’s new roadmap, less than half of the work in this direction has been completed. This is in line with the old roadmap, which took at least a year for the first phase. At the same time, the area of advanced research located at the bottom of the diagram remains largely outside the scope of the developers’ activities..
